Can you install window shutters yourself?
/You may expect to read what you may think of as the shutter version of a mechanic’s overcharging hiss here, but you won’t find it. Yes, we would prefer it if we installed your shutters for you, because we have the experience to get it right – after all, it’s not likely to be something that you do every day – but also if you’ve paid money for a product, we believe that this should include the installation, so that we know that the shutters are doing their job and really adding something to your home, especially if you have had them designed and created bespoke to your space and needs.
After all, the last thing that you will want is cause any damage to your new shutters or your home.
However, if DIY is something you enjoy or you would prefer it if you were the person working on your home, it is possible to install window shutters yourself, following this guide...
First off, you’ll need the right tools for the job:
· Power drill
· Electric planer
· Spirit level
· Hammer drill
· Screwdriver and attachments
· Stanley knife
· Tape measure
· Silicone
· Masking tape
The frame is the first part of the shutter that you put together and install, which will be guided by the frame and recess type. Once you’ve added a few fixing points inside and outside of the recess, you can move on to attaching the panels by dropping the hinge pins in place. At this stage you should check that you are happy with how the shutters move and adjust as required. When you’re drilling, make sure that the holes line up with those that are pre-drilled with the shutter, and place rawplugs in the holes to give an extra grip to the screws.
Things to bear in mind
Your window recess type affects how your shutters will be installed. Most windows line up with the exterior wall line, but there is always going to be a difference, and this area is the recess – the perfect area for shutters to be installed. Depending on how big your space is, you may need to have someone along to help you install the shutters, as it can be pretty impossible to juggle everything on your own on larger installations.
