What are composite doors made of?

When you’re looking for a new front door the number of things to consider can be a bit overwhelming, and it can sometimes feel like you need to learn a different language as you go along.

Because front doors make a huge statement about your home and who you are, it’s not a choice to be taken lightly, but there’s a balance to be met between style and safety, so you’ll want to be informed not only about the colours and glazing options but the different levels of security, thermal efficiency and materials available. So can you feel safe and get the right style for you? Well, first off, it’s good to know exactly what your door is made of.

As one of the newest types of doors used for homes, composite probably wasn’t on the market last time you went door shopping, and while its name may sound unusual, chances are that you’ve heard of the two things that make it different – a combination of uPVC and fibreglass.

Sometimes referred to as GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) fibreglass makes up the solid core of the door, and provides a high level of protection from intruders while making sure your heating stays in your home. The glass used to make up the window portions of the door is laminated, so if for any reason the glass ever did break, the lamination would ensure that it shatters but all stay in one place and doesn’t fall from the frame. The solid core and windows which make up the door are then installed into a uPVC frame, making them an incredibly strong unit.

This combination not only makes the door extremely secure but highly resistant to the ever-changing British climate; as the insulating foam brings a higher level of thermal efficiency, so you can better regulate your home’s temperature and keep your energy bills down while reducing your carbon footprint. All of this combines to make composite doors very different to others on the market.

So how does it look? Well, from a distance, you would be forgiven for thinking that the composite door is actually wooden, as no matter which colour you may choose, it’s applied to a wood grain effect in the door. So in terms of style, if you like the look of a wooden door, you can have exactly that, with all the benefits of a composite door, which – unlike wood – won’t discolour or fade in time, won’t rot with the weather and is easy to clean.
