How to clean rubber seals on double glazed windows

New windows make a huge difference to your home, bringing in more natural light and giving your space a real lift. Once they’re in, you’ll want to keep that feeling, so it’s important to try to keep your windows looking as bright and beautiful as when they first arrived for as long as possible.

Luckily double glazed windows are, for the most part, easy to maintain and don’t require too much attention. However, the rubber seals do prove to be a little trickier, and questions about the best ways to clean these have filled conversations on cleaning and DIY forums over the years. To save you time trawling through these, here are our tips on how to clean double glazing’s rubber seals – without damaging your windows.

Keep the chemicals away

While it’s important not to use harsh cloths or chemicals on your window frames, as they are likely to cause damage including discolouration and dulling, you need to take precautions a bit further with the seals.

Warm soapy water should be enough to keep your window seals clean, and it’s vital that you not let them come into contact with any chemicals, no matter how non-abrasive they may be, as this may cause the seals to peel.

Be careful with colours

While it’s important for you to be aware of what you’re using to clean your windows, it’s just as important to think about how you’re doing it. Never use scouring brushes or wire wool to clean your frames or seals, as they can cause irreparable damage. Use a soft cloth the same colour as your frames – different colours can leave stains on your frames, which won’t be easy to get out.

Get out your paint brush

When it comes to seal cleaning, it’s not just about how your windows look, it’s also about your health. It’s really important to remove dust and condensation, otherwise, over time, there is a good chance they will become moldy, which can cause them to be even harder to clean and cause respiratory problems.

A good way to remove dust is to use a soft brush to gently knock the particles away. Once you’ve given the seals a once over, add a little water to your brush, to ensure that every bit of dust is gone.
