Can you paint uPVC doors?
/As far as long term commitments go, the first thing to come to mind probably won’t be your front door, but given the levels of security, insulation, durability and weather resistance offered by uPVC, it’s all part of the deal. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay with the same look.
Having first become popular in the 1980s, the introduction of uPVC as a material for windows, conservatories and doors revolutionised the industry. In fact, some doors will be heading towards their 40th birthdays in the coming years, because they have lasted so well.
While uPVC is a very low maintenance material, protecting properties from the elements day in, day out, can cause it to look like it needs a little bit of TLC. Having had the same door for so long, it can be tempting to head to the showrooms to check out the latest models, but as we all become a little bit more aware of how our buying habits impact the planet, it’s also worth noting that it is possible to breathe new life into your uPVC door, simply by adding a lick of paint.
But it can’t be just any old paint.
When applied to plastic, most paints will just wipe off, because they are simply sitting on top of the surface; or there will be some paints which will just stick to the surface, which is no good when the door’s material is expanding and contracting with the heat – in time this will just give a cracked, worn appearance. With this in mind, it’s important to use a paint which will bond with the substrate and is as weather-resistant as the door in terms of flexibility so it will move with the changes in the weather. It’s also best to get a paint with UV protection, so it doesn’t look bleached after just one summer.
You should only paint doors which have been installed for over 12 months. This is really important, because the resins used during the manufacturing process need this time to leave the top layer of the plastic. Once this has gone, it will also be easier for the paint to bind to the uPVC, and ensure that you’re getting your intended finish.
Once you have decided on your new colour, it doesn’t take long to give your door – and in turn your home – a whole new look. It’s an easy and economical way to bring new life to your home, increase its kerb appeal and ensure that your front door is still reflective of your tastes – after all, you probably don’t have the same hairstyle as you did in the 80s or 90s.
