Make the most of your conservatory or orangery this Christmas
When you were first dreaming of adding extra space to your home, you probably imagined late, balmy evenings watching sunsets out of the window, rather than a place to drink eggnog and pull crackers – but being the multi-functional rooms that they are, conservatories and orangeries can be really useful areas to have at any time of year.
From how you use the space to how you dress it, there are lots of different ways to make the most of your conservatory or orangery over the festive period.
Christmas dinner
Arguably one of the most important meals of the year, Christmas dinner can come with a lot of pressure for the cook and the hosts (and the guests’ acting skills if the food isn’t up to scratch!). Bringing the main meal into a space that may not often be used for dining can make it feel extra special for everyone – even the chef: not only does it takes the crowd away from the kitchen but the novelty can be a real treat once the cook is off their feet.
Oh, Christmas tree
Of course, there are other options for how your orangery and conservatory could be used. It’s an ideal space to give your Christmas tree centre stage, and create a warm, homey Christmas grotto feel for your guests to gather in while looking out over your garden. This cosiness can also help if the dinner you had planned to serve at 1pm really appears on the table closer to 3pm – the right ambience can go a long way to helping your guests enjoy their day and make them more forgiving when it doesn’t quite go to plan.
When it comes to decor, less is more
When dressing the room, remember that all of your decorations will be reflected in the many panes of glass all around, so there’s no need to go overboard – the glass will do a lot of the work for you. It doesn’t take much to make a conservatory or an orangery feel cosy – lights around where the roof and wall meet, along with simple table decorations can fill the room with Christmas spirit. If you really want to make a big impact, be sure to choose a colour scheme or theme and stick to it, making the room a real Christmas sanctuary.
Create a Christmas arch
How many Christmas cards did you get this year? Enough to surround the doorway to your orangery or conservatory? By placing the cards around the doorway, you can ensure that your guests are surrounded by Christmas messages as they head in. They can also help to spark some conversations, to keep your guests entertained.
